Our Teaching Philosophy

Reading and Writing are Team Sports

Think about it: writers need readers, and readers need writers. The best writers in the world will tell you that writing is not something that can be accomplished entirely alone. Every writer needs coaching, guidance and feedback to reach their full potential. We’re all better when we’re in it together!

ANYONE CAN BECOME A BETTER WRITER…AND THINKER

Every writer starts somewhere, and can always improve. Learning to organize our ideas and to think through arguments logically can make every aspect of our lives better. When it comes to reading, we don’t just tell students what to think. We teach them to find patterns, make connections and ask questions, developing critical metacognitive and comprehension skills.

BACKWARDS DESIGN

At The Writers Bloc, we help students identify the objectives for each piece of writing they do. Then, we help them determine the audience and teach them about the varying demands and expectations of the genre in which they are writing. Understanding the principles of audience, purpose and genre flexibility are key to growing as a writer and communicator.

STUDENT-CENTERED, CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE

Every student has different prior experience with reading, writing and the education system. We have experience meeting the needs of students from every walk of life. At The Writer’s Bloc, every student is treated as a whole individual.

WRITING IS BOTH AN ART AND A SCIENCE

Acknowledging writing as both an art and a science allows us to guide students to be the best versions of themselves within a given genre, while encouraging creativity and independence.
